What's on in Cheltenham

Apart from horse racing, Cheltenham is renowned for its large number of events and festivals - the most famous being the Jazz, Science, Music and Literature Festivals.  Hilden House is a keen supporters of all the Cheltenham Festivals and is a popular place to stay. OLD MAN DIODE Parabola Arts Centre Thurs 6th February 2014 A dedicated collaborative project between Old Man Diode and poet Rick Holland. Stripped back electronics and staggering percussion from Wampa set up a truly exciting mixture of live voices. The programme will include past compositions plus new material to be premiered at this concert.

CHELTENHAM FILM SOCIETY SCREENING OF IN THE LAST SUMMER OF LA BOYITA Bacon Theatre, Dean Close Tues 18th February 2014 On the verge of adolescence, Jorgelina travels with her father to the Argentinian countryside to spend time with her childhood friend Mario, who is learning to become a champion horseman. Over the summer, Jorgelina finds out Mario’s secret and in very different ways both face the challenges of growing up (Spanish)
CHELTENHAM FILM SOCIETY SCREENING OF FREE MEN Bacon Theatre, Dean Close Tues 25h February 2014 Set in occupied Paris in 1942, ‘Free Men’ tells the story of some Arabs who help resistance fighters, including North African Jews. A young Algerian immigrant is persuaded to spy on the local Mosque. This multi-themed film offers an alternative vision of unity in the face of oppression compared with the ethnic tensions in France today. (French)
CHELTENHAM FILM SOCIETY SCREENING OF WADJDA Bacon Theatre, Dean Close Tues 4th March 2014 Wadjda is a 10 year-old girl who desperately wants a bicycle. But in Riyadh there all sorts of reasons why a girl cannot ride a bicycle. Up against a traditional society, with great determination, Wadjda devises various ways to achieve her aim. This is the debut film from Saudi Arabia’s first woman director. She succeeds in getting across serious messages with great humour and wit. (French)

CHELTENHAM FILM SOCIETY SCREENING OF BARBARA Bacon Theatre, Dean Close Tues 18th March 2014 After applying to leave communist East Germany, a high-flying doctor is punished by being banished to a small country hospital, where she is constantly watched. Between plotting an escape, and suffering the attentions of the secret police, she treats and befriends a runaway from a youth labour camp, with dangerous consequences for them both. A subtle, atmospheric account of courage and compromise in harsh circumstances. (German)
CHELTENHAM FILM SOCIETY SCREENING OF UNTOUCHABLE Bacon Theatre, Dean Close 11th - 14th March 2014 A wealthy Parisian gentleman, Philippe, is a quadriplegic following a flying accident. He hires a young black African, Driss, from the banlieues to be his personal carer – and so begins an odd-couple relationship that proves unexpectedly fulfilling for both men. Based on a true story, this film tackles so many tricky subjects head-on, making it both hugely funny and very uplifting. (French)
TOBY KEARNEY PERCUSSION Parabola Arts Centre Weds 9th April 2014 Toby Kearney’won the percussion section of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2006. Since then Toby has studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and at the Royal College of Music as well as performing as a soloist and for many of the country’s top orchestras. His programme includes works from Philip Glass, Evelyn Glennie and Eric Sammut.
